Born on the 29th of March in the year 1956 in Tandag, Surigao del Sur to Vicente Pimentel, Sr. and Felicidad Ty, Governor Johnny Pimentel became a welcome addition to their family, the lineage of which is undeniably that of true leadership blood flowing through their veins. And through the years, he had proven to be not just "one of the Pimentels" but his works and his accomplishments are the ones that speak of him.
Gov. Johnny earned his college education at the Ateneo de Manila University, graduating with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Business Management. He is married to Rosalinda Cabreros Cruz and together they were blessed with four children.
It was in 1995 when he began the life of servitude as the Vice Governor of Surigao del Sur. During his term, he was given several citations and was recognized for his contributions to the various sectors of the province. All of these continued to mold him as a public servant and made the people see that this kind of leadership does not have to end when his term ended in 1998.
He continued to serve the people as the Provincial Administrator from 2001 to 2010. It was during these years when we witnessed how the little province of Surigao del Sur blossomed into a present day "boom-town" in Mindanao. His term as was capped with him being awarded as one of CARAGA'S Outstanding Public Servant by the Civil Service Commission in 2008.
Nine years as Provincial Administrator proved to be a very good training ground for Governor Pimentel who at present, still humbly claims that he is "…still learning, and will continue to learn". It is on this fertile ground that he planted all the seeds of wisdom and experience that he had gathered through the years. It is with this mindset that he was able to concretely formulate his plans for Surigao del Sur when he finally ran for the position of Provincial Governor in the May 2010 Automated Elections.
Governor Johnny Pimentel's Vision for Surigao del Sur is encapsulated in three letters: JTP. JTP stands forJourney Towards Progress. From that Vision, he crafted a three-letter Mission: SDS, which means Sustainable Development for Surigaonons. To ensure that all the aspects of public service be given equal focus, he came up with a set of objectives to serve as his guide.
At the top of the list is the Prioritization of Infrastructure Development. He believes that it is important to regularly maintain roads and bridges that will serve as the province's link to the bigger market of Mindanao and that of the whole country as well. He sees that for Surigao del Sur to be considered as a top contender in the realm of agricultural production in the Philippines, farm inputs should flow into the province cheaper and faster and in turn, the province's farm produce will gain competitive price in the market and the key is bigger and wider roads in the province.
Secondly, Governor Pimentel will continue the construction on potable water supply system in the province of Surigao del Sur. Understanding the need for a healthy citizenry, he aims to expedite the said program. Also part of this is the repair and rehabilitation of all health facilities in the province and to arm its health workers with all the resources they would need.
With the continuous growth of Information and Communication Technology in the country comes the need for any province to strengthen their ICT linkages and educate and empower all Surigaonons so that they will be well-equipped in this endeavor.
The richness and beauty of Surigao del Sur is not a secret to us Filipinos and even to foreigners who visit the country. Again, strengthening infrastructure development in the province will help in promoting the province as one of the top Eco-Tourism Hubs in the Philippines. Also in line with this is the continuous protection of the province's natural resources, specifically by promoting responsible mining, systematizing solid waste management, restoring mangrove areas, preserving marine-life sanctuaries, watersheds, and other protected areas.
Accomplishing all of the abovementioned goals, entry of medium and large industry investments will also be encouraged and the Provincial Government will ensure that the province will be able to compete with other neighboring provinces in terms of progress and development in all vital aspects.
